Whole Green Moong Dal Curry

Dal means Lentils in english, its basically means dried pulses. There are many kinds of dals available, some of them are Whole green Moong dal, Tuvar dal, Moong dal, Split red moong/ mung etc . Dal is used to make thick stew or curry, in India, Pakistan, Sri lanka , Nepal & Bangladesh. This tiny dal contains the maximum no of protiens. There are various ways to prepare a dal, one such way i have shown in the video & you can check the ingredients & meaurement as mentioned below.

For me this is a go to recipe often as requires less monitoring time & easily made without any hassle, you know 2 hands are no enough for a mom of young kids. Let's get started.

The very 1st step requires washing it thrice to remove any impurities & dirt and soak it overnight & pressure cook( 5-6 whistle, it varies in different cookers ) it the next day, which will reduced the cooking time of dal into half .

Either cook it before hand as shown in the video or directly use a pressure cooker & finally add the soaked dal & whistle in 6-7 times. ( or until done) .

Ingredients :-

Moong Dal - 1/2 cup ( serves 2 ) or 1 cup ( serves 4 )

Onion 2 Medium size

Green Chillies 2 ( as per taste)

Turmeric Powder 1 tsp

Oil 2 Tbsp

Mustard Seeds 1 Tsp

Asafoetida 1/2 Tsp

Curry Leaves 6-7

Ginger Garlic paste/ Pieces As per taste

Water 1 Cup

Salt 1 Tsp

Tomato Chopped 1

Garam Masala 1 Tsp

Method :-

1) Soak the Moong dal overnight

2) Pressure cook together Moong dal + 1 Green Chilli and 1/2 onion as shown in the below pic, around 5-6 whistle.

3) In a deep pan add Oil 2 Tbsp. Once hot add Mustard Seeds 1 Tsp ( Let it crackle), Then add Asafoetida/ Hing ( helps in digestion), Curry leaves (few) , then add Chopped onion, Ginger, Garlic . And then add salt, Turmeric powder, (red chilli powder or green chillies only if you want it to be more spicy ) and cook it for 10 mins .

4) Add Chopped tomatoes & Garam Masala & further cook until tomatoes are soft and you can see oil separating.

*** You can do the above 3 rd & 4 th step directly in pressure cooker & then add in soaked dal .****

5 ) Add the cooked dal & some cilantro/ coriander leaves . Add in more water & cook for 10 -15 mins, it combine well until it becomes creamy.

So easy and tasty & Healthy !!!

Happy Cooking
